Session Description

Users of Wikipedia describe formative assessment as a verb, a process, something that happens during the learning, and an integral part of the learning, and in a variety of ways. During this workshop, we will dig deeper into the topic of formative assessment and how technology can be used to implement it. We will investigate several web sites on the topic and then participate in the process of formative assessment to better understand the students’ experience. We will spend most of the day using technology tools such as Study Island, Poll Everywhere, Quizlet, Socrative, Google Forms, and Discovery Education’s Teacher Center to create technology-enhanced formative assessments for use in your classroom. Audience: K-12 Teachers.

Tech Tools

FIRST:  DECIDE ON CONTENT    Step 1:  Tour Site    Step 2: Create an Account     Step 3:  Start Creating, Ask ?s     Step 4:  Share
Self Reflection:  I have a lot of online test tools listed here, but can't other types of projects also be formative assessments??  Also consider online tools such as ToonDoo (comics) , Infographics (about) , concept maps , talkin' things, movies and more!   Also, sites that provide pre-tests and then adjust acordingly, like GFC Learn, is formative.  Key is making the invisible visible, and then providing specific, appropriate, focused feedback!!

Also - why would access to mobile apps help encourage formative assessment by students?

On the back channel  Post what do you plan on creating today/tool you plan to use.  Someone else in the room may be able to collaborate with you as you work.

REVISIT & REVISE #4:  Re-open your formative assessment Google Document and add to it!  Consider adding links to tools you especially like, the links to your products you have created, and even a link back to this page.  This should now be a pretty summary doc on what you have learned today.  When you refer back to it in the future, you may be excited to see how you will have changed.

On the back channel:  Post links to your projects for others to test out!  Get some test users of your assessment, and get feedback!

Peer Collaboration:   Feel free to move around and help each other develop your projects.  We have many experts at SWSD - teachers who have actually implemented these tools in their classrooms!
